Need advice on buying older phone possibly ATRIX??

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 10:55 AM PST

Hi guys, I need an advice on buying an older model smart phone. I don't want to spend more than $200 on it and I was thinking of getting Atrix 4G that costs less than $200. Is it still good idea to buy this older model since it's not going to get an ice cream sandwich upgrade? Or does this really matter? What would be the lifespan left of this phone? I don't need this phone to play any games, I just need it to browse, email and skype. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time.

syncing mobile devices

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 01:50 PM PST

Our company currently uses the blackberry enterprise server to sync out blackberry devices and Good for Enterprise for our android and apple products. Is there currently an alternative that works seemlessly with syncing mobile devices to corporate data? I have heard that the new blackberry enterprise server (we are upgrading next month) we be able to support all 3 devices. However, I wanted to get input on what other companies/users are using or would recommend using. Our company still primarly uses blackberry devices (yes old school) because they sync so well with the company contacts/emails/calendar/etc. Is there an alternative to this so that we can move away from blackberry devices, like the rest of the world is doing?

Turn your Android into a Mobile Laboratory

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:01 AM PST

Hi.

We want to represent our Android Sensor Project at indiegogo, under the name "Turn your Android into a Mobile Laboratory".

We have developed a mini USB adapter called SensorNotes, with an open software architecture. By using 4-pins only, the sensorNotes can interface just about any type of sensors you want. Ranging from simple temperature resistive sensors, to digital barometer and humidity sensors, and up to devices that require more power for operation besides interface such as is an Arduino board.

Our first application is highly accurate thermometer operating at high precision of 0.2 F. It can display and store your daily morning measurements. As an example you can easily find out the health state of your thyroid gland, and women may predict their ovulation cycles. Make a sensor of your own! In the past years we have specified and deployed the so-called SensorNotes compact message layer. By using it, one can simply make one's own sensor, plug it into the USB Adapter and get the results immediately on the Android display, or may even configure the sensor. One can further make use of this data and integrate it with other applications using the Open API, or directly using JSON web-service access.

By supporting our project we will bring out even more sensors and help us create an open sensor platform, the SensorNotes.

THL W7 runs MTK 6577 dual core 1.2G CPU and powerVR SGX531 ultra GPU.It has a 5.7” 1280*720 IPS HD d

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:01 AM PST

THL W7 runs MTK 6577 dual core 1.2G CPU and powerVR SGX531 ultra GPU.It has a 5.7" 1280*720 IPS HD display and dual cameras,8MP sony HD rear camera and 3.2MP front facing camera. The device pre install android 4.0.

Looks
From the pics you can see that THL W7 looks really like genuine Samsung note II.It measures 158(mm)*83(mm) across glass-covered front,a little bit bigger than note II.The phone still measures 10mm thick and weighs 225g.When I touch the device,it's kind of big for my grabing, not as comfortable as I hold my Samsung note.In addition, the metal frame on the edge of body is more than galaxy note II.The main distinction between two devices is W7 comes with no Spen.

Hardware
With the looks of Samsung galaxy note II,it has a entire Chinese phone heart-MTK6577 chip. The
chip is not so powerful as the international brand smartphone chip, but it is enough for you.I've tried some apps, videos and games, they all work well and smoothly.Only browsing pages is disappointing,it has seconds lag when I try to open aol.com,bbc.com.(Just view my hands-on video review after the break)
Actually,MTK6577 chip has won great popularity among $150 level smart phones manufacturers in China due to its stable and low consuming performance,so if you're not going to some super large scale 3D games,it is capable of handling daily recreational tasks.

Display
Sparing it from comparing with those expensive big brand flagships, the display of THL W7 is stunning.Brightness, contrast and viewing angles are all impressive, color reproduction is brilliant and even outdoor visibility is superb. It's very comfortable to read ebook and watch videos.

Camera
It's really hard to say the cameras are good or not.For me,it's not good enough,I think that's mainly because I've experienced some world-class phone cameras, like Iphone4s,Iphone5,Galaxy note.As a matter of fact, from the photos it took, the camera performance is quite acceptable. In other words,if you're not pursuing super cool pictures, the camera can work for you(hands-on pics and videos follows)

Battery Life
Just make a statement here,I wasn't recording the battery capacity and time in detail. All I mention here is general experience in playing THL W7.
when I first got the phone,I charged it up to 94% baterry, then I browsed 10mins pages and played half an hour games,it turned out to be 82%.After a whole night(9 hours) standby, the phone still got 58% battery capacity, then I used it run benchmark, took photos and videos, voice search for around an hour, the battery was 45%.From the statistics,I guess the phone can have more than four days standby and one day and half daily use, like listening music, calling, playing videos, taking photos etc.

Package
The first word comes to me is "thoughtful" when I open the package of THL W7.The box is pure white with some product pic and logo on it.Opening it,there are basic three floors, the top one is the phone in a plastic protective bag,the middle is instructional manual, warranty and screen-protective skin, the bottom is the accessories, charger,USB cable, earphone.
I've barely seen that the package comes with free of charge screen skin and earphone at the same time when buying phones now. That's not about the money but that the manufactures take customers into consideration.

looking for an upgrade need recommendations

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 12:20 AM PST

currently i have a blackberry curve 8520 I'm tired of qwerty keypads and i want a camera with flash some internal memory and a responsive touch screen i also like to have a micro sd slot as i don't want to have to connect it to my pc all the time, but it really dosen't have to though i just like removeable media. I have used a T-Mobile wing and a unlocked storm both for 6 months. wing sucked gave it to my brother, storm was better but the floating screen click was the worst part of it and ruined it for me so i traded for the curve brand new from a friend and been happy for 2+ years now. Time for an upgrade but a new phone is out of the question price wise. I have no experience with an iphone or android phone atm but I am being open minded i am willing to pay $130 to $150 after christmas and might go up another $100 after January if i wait but rather spend $100 if possible. so far the Motorola Atrix 4G looks good feature wise, but I am unsure there's also unlocked iphone 3g/3gs 8-16gb depending on condition going for $100 and a little over used atm. If anyone has any phone recommendations that would be great thanks.

Does unlocking affect your phone warranty?

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 04:00 AM PST

Hi everyone,

This is a pretty popular question online and something a lot of people need help with.

Some people are unsure whether or not unlocking their phone will void their phones warranty, and we think it is important to let you know the answer.

If you use an unlock code to unlock your phone, your manufacturer warranty will not be affected.

If you have bought your phone from a network with a contract, unlocking it might not make them very happy, but all information about how it impacts your contract will be available in the paperwork.

For more information, such as answering the questions exactly who can provide your unlock code, please feel free to check out our our article about phone unlocking and it's effects in your warranty.

All the best everyone and have a very Merry Christmas.

Darren from Mobile Unlocked.

help! new phone scam?

Posted: 14 Dec 2012 04:07 PM PST

so i recently went to a chinese phone carrier service that sells regular phones.

one of the deals that i know they have been implementing for a long time , to get cheaper phone plan or cheaper phone they will send you a different phone, such as the iphone that you have to bring back once its delivered to your house.

can someone share some light on this whole deal?
how illegal it is etc?

at current, i was engaged with this, but a problem had arrived. i never received th phones. now the chinese place is threatening me that they will send cops to my house to search for the phones, is that possible?

they also said they see it at my house on gps, but the phones are not there..

they also had me do an initial deposit for the phones.

any help would be awesome. thank you

Need Recommendation - Specific Criteria - GPS, No touch screens, prepaid

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 07:44 PM PST

This is a phone for a 10 year old.
Androids and such have their uses, but I'd really rather not have one in this case.
Battery life is poor, they are expensive to replace, and for panic-mode emergency dialing they're too clumsy.

So if I could get an informed recommendation, I would be very, very grateful.

Requirements:
  • Must be useable with a prepaid service, service area in northeast Ohio
  • Must have a standard dialpad (flip phone/clamshell, slide-down, bar, etc)
  • Must have GPS
  • Must be able to run a GPS tracking program (don't care about navigation) like Google Latitude, Accutracking, Mologogo, etc.
  • No full-face touch screens

Bonus:
  • Under $50
  • Slide-out keyboard
  • Camera

The Samsung Entro and Samsung M575 from Virgin look good, but I'm not sure if they'll run a GPS location app (or if there's one available).
The Samsung Array & Samsung Factor from Boost also look good, but apparently Boost blocks 3rd-party access to the GPS in their CDMA non-smartphones. I know Sprint also sells the Array (for $$$). Not sure if the Sprint firmware could be flashed over the Boost firmware to make the GPS available (or if the Sprint firmware is even available).
I'm willing to pay a few bucks a month for the GPS locator software if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Will unlocking a blocked phone work?

Posted: 11 Dec 2012 02:01 AM PST

Hi guys,

This is something that we've been asked a number of times and I just wanted to get the information out there.

Some people have a blocked phone - this can be for a variety of reasons, but often people in this situation don't understand how phones work and then attempt to unlock it, thinking it will then work on a different network. Let me explain why it won't.

Network locks are often what are placed on a phone by a network, which prevents the phone working with any SIM card that isn't from the original network. This is programmed into the phone. Using an unlock code will tell the phone to remove this network lock permanently, so you can start using any SIM card.

However, a block is placed on a phone by the network. This means that the phone will not working with any network, regardless of the SIM card that is inserted.

So technically, you can unlock a blocked phone. Simply because by using an unlock code, you are telling the phone to accept any SIM card. However, now the phone is able to accept the previously foreign SIM cards, it still won't be able to connect with a network because of the block.

If you are have done, there is still hope. But you will need to get the block removed. To do this, speak with your original network and verify that you are the owner of the phone. They, and only they, can then remove the block and allow your phone to connect.

For more information you can read this article about unlocking a blocked phone.

I hope that helps. Any questions, please let me know.

Darren.

Upgrade or wait?

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 06:12 PM PST

My iPhone 4's contract on Verizon ends in about 2 weeks, and I made up my mind I would wait until after the new year to buy a new phone. I thought I was pretty set on the HTC DNA, but after hearing it has some mediocre battery life and only 11GB onboard storage, I was pretty dissapointed. My iPhone 4 has 16GB, and at times that isnt quite enough for me.
I absolutely hate my iPhone, keyboard lag is a regular occurence and happens everytime I text, by the time I am finished typing the thing is still on the 1st or 2nd letter. Just a ton of other little things that have made me want to stay away from iOS from now on. In looking at android phones I still feel the best one for me is the DNA. I am planning on upgrading probably the second week of January, but I feel like I shouldn't settle on a phone I will be stuck with for 2 years. My question is, do I torture myself by keeping this iPhone 4 until the next smartphone release (I've been eyeing the galaxy S4) or some other flagship android phone, or just upgrade now and get the DNA?
If I could have any phone on verizon I would have a HTC One X+ in my hands right now. Screen size isnt too big a deal for me, as long as its over about 4.2 inches. I am mostly looking for storage and a crap ton of RAM. I think that most smartphones out nowadays would satisfy my battery needs. I never have problems with mmy iphones battery. Obviously I want a pretty fast smartphone.
Is there a new release I'm oblivious to?
I think I would be willing to go with the iPhone 5s/6 if it has a killer feature, I feel like the 5 has just about nothing over the 4s.

Switching carriers is not an option

Huawei ascend g300 vs LG swift l5 - with is a better choice?

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 10:13 AM PST

Hi all
My contract with operator is getting close to the renewal date, so ask for advice in choosing the phone based on your experience.

Huawei looks nicer in my opinion than the angular LG, but as I'm not a woman, this parameter is the least important, what matters is performance! ;)

For G300 is in favor by a higher resolution screen and a faster processor. As faults occur frequently arguments such as: poor camera, medium responsive touch, system "jerks" after update to ICS. Which ones are true and which are myths?

My next question is: is the camera in LG in fact better than in the Chinese phone, and is the phone smoother, despite a weaker processor when running ICS? If both answers are yes, how is the screen quality in LG, is it really so hideous in comparison with other four inch phones?
The operator also offers me Xperia tipo, at this price, but somehow nothing stands out above the other two.

Earbuds vs in-ear earbuds comfort while laying on your side?

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 06:54 AM PST

If anyone had both of those earbuds types could you tell me if the in ear headbuds are comfortable when you lay on them with your head.... Like on the pillow? Or does the in ear part "jam" into an ear to make them uncomfortable? As the normal earbuds are comfortable when laying on a side.

Thanks

Help choosing a phone

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 01:58 PM PST

The phone I have now is an HTC Eris. A friend gave it to me a while back it is now starting to act really weird. I want to buy a new or lightly used phone off of ebay and just transfer service over. The problem is I have no idea what to look for. I really only use my phone for calls, texts, and the internet. I don't use many apps. I also want a physical qwerty keyboard on the phone. I also don't want to spend too much money. I don't use my phone enough to justify spending several hundred dollars on one. I had a LG Ally and liked it, and was thinking about getting another one of those, but I figured I would get some opinions before making the decision. Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I have Verizon wireless.
