How-to: Motorola RAZR (XT910): Install CM 11 Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROM (Unofficial CM Release)

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 04:41 AM PST

Although Motorola has recently released the Android 4.4 update on the Moto X, it may take a while before the manufacturer manages to launch the update on other devices in its line-up. In fact, the highest priority right now is probably given to Verizon's new Droid Ultra line-up. There's also the Droid RAZR HD to consider, so in other words, it could take a long time before RAZR owners will be abne to enjoy the KitKat release. There's also a possibility that the older RAZR line-up will never receive the official update.

But, fret not, because there are ways to experience KitKat on the RAZR (XT910) with the use of custom ROMs. This is a guide that will allow you to flash the recently released CM 11 custom ROM on the Motorola RAZR. As most of you know, CM 11 is based on Android 4.4, but the firmware also includes several extra features, such as, battery and performance optimizations, an upgraded web browsing experience and more.

NOTE: Please keep in mind that this particular CM 11 ROM for the RAZR is not an official CyanogenMod release. In fact, it's a "port" developed by XDA members and developers. As such, you may run into certain bugs with this build.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ FIRST:

  • This guide is meant only for the Motorola RAZR XT910. Do not attempt to apply this guide on other smartphones or RAZR variants. If you wish to apply the update on the Droid RAZR (XT912) then visit this link instead
  • Your RAZR needs to be rooted and it needs to run the latest CWM (or TWRP) recovery image in order to be able and apply this ROM. DO NOT follow this guide any further if these prerequisites are not met
  • This process requires you to perform a full wipe / factory reset. Create backups if necessary
  • Use the "Helium" application if you wish to backup app data
  • You can use the "SMS backup & restore" app in order to backup messages
  • To backup APN settings, you can use "APN Settings Backup & Restore"
  • To backup your contacts, use your Gmail account
  • This guide includes information on how to create a NANDROID backup, as an extra safety precaution
  • Before proceeding, you need to enable "USB debugging". To do so, go to "Menu" > "Settings" > "Developer options" and mark the "USB debugging option"
  • Make sure that your smartphone has at least 60-70% battery life. It's very important for your smartphone not to run out of battery while you follow this tutorial
  • This is an advanced guide. In case you brick or damage your phone, you can't hold the developers or anyone else responsible
  • Don't skip any of the steps

Entering Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: DO NOT follow this guide right now. This is a small tutorial which you will need a bit later, in order to enter recovery mode. (NOTE: you need to already nave CWM or TWRP installed)

  1. Go to the Play Store and download the "Quick Boot" application
  2. After the app is installed, launch it
  3. From the menu, select "recovery". This will boot your smartphone in recovery mode

Installing CM 11 Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROM (Unofficial) on the Motorola RAZR (XT910):

  1. Download the necessary CM 11 ROM for the Motorola RAZR XT910 by visiting this link
  2. Since the ROM does not include Google apps, you'll need to download a separate Gapps package from this link
  3. Save both files on your computer. Don't unzip them
  4. Connect your Droid RAZR to your computer using the USB cable. (Keep in mind that "USB debugging" should be enabled at this point)
  5. Copy and paste the downloaded files onto your phone's SD storage
  6. Once the files have been copied, unplug your smartphone from your PC
  7. Boot your smartphone in recovery mode (refer to the guide above)
  8. You will now create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM. Assuming that you don't like CM 11, or if you experience issues with the ROM, this backup will allow you to return to your current ROM. To create a backup, select "backup and restore", name to the file and then save it
  9. After the backup has been created, select "wipe data / factory reset"; "wipe cache partition" and "wipe dalvick cache"
  10. Return to the main recovery menu
  11. Select "Install zip from SD card" and then select "choose zip from SD card". Then, browse for and select the CM 11 archive.
  12. After the CM 11 ROM has been flashed, select "install zip from SD card" > "choose zip from SD card" again. However, this time select the Google apps zip and flash it
  13. After both packages have been installed, select "+++go back+++" and then "reboot system now". NOTE: this first reboot after the flash could take several minutes to complete. Be patient and don't press any buttons
    • NOTE: If your smartphone takes more than 10 minutes to reboot after the flashing, or if the device is stuck in a boot loop, then you will need to repeat the guide from the beginning. Don't skip any steps.
  14. Congratulations! You can now add your Google account and perform restores from the backup apps

NOTE: If you wish to return to the previous ROM, you can use the NANDROID backup in order to do so. Reboot your handset in recovery mode (as instructed above) and then select "backup / restore". Follow any additional instructions as they pop-up on the screen.

How-to: Motorola Atrix HD: Install PSX Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROM

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 03:23 AM PST

Android 4.4 KitKat has been recently announced, and Motorola has been among the first smartphone manufacturers to deliver the update (excluding Google of course). The Moto X received Android 4.4, and we can expect other handsets to get the update soon. Sadly, the Motorola Atrix HD might not make the cut, but until that is decided, you can still enjoy Android 4.4 on the handset in question, with the help of custom ROMs.

This guide will show you how you can install the PSX (Pure Speed X) custom ROM that is based on Android KitKat. Note that this is not an official release. PSX is a custom ROM that has been developed by XDA members and developers, so it doesn't have any ties with Google or Motorola. The ROM seems solid, and although all KitKat features are reportedly working as intended, you may encounter some bugs.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING

  • This guide is meant only for the Motorola Atrix HD. Do not attempt to flash this ROM on other smartphones, else you may brick your phone
  • In order to apply this guide, you need to have a rooted Motorola Atrix HD that runs on the latest version of CWM Recovery image. (TWRP is also a valid option)
  • The process requires you to perform a factory reset and cache wipe. Your contacts, apps, internet settings, call logs, personal data and more will be deleted! Create backups if necessary
  • You can use the "Helium" application if you wish to backup data stored in applications
  • To backup messages, you can use the "SMS backup & restore" app from the Play Store
  • The "APN Settings Backup & Restore" application can be used in order to backup your APN settings
  • Your contacts should already be backed up onto your Gmail account, but if it isn't, then make sure you do so
  • In order to avoid issues, you will need to enable "USB Debugging". To do so, go to "Menu" > "Settings" > "Developer options" and enable "USB debugging"
  • Before proceeding, make sure that your smartphone has at least 60-70% battery life left. This is a very important step, as it is vital that your device will not remain out of juice during the flashing process.
  • This guide includes instructions on how to create a NANDROID backup
  • This guide is for advanced users. If you brick or damage your phone, or if you lose data, you can't hold anyone responsible
  • Do not skip any steps

Entering Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: You should not follow this guide at this point. This is a small tutorial that shows you how to boot in recovery mode. Later on during the installation process of the ROM, you will need to refer to this guide. NOTE: Remember that you need to have the latest version of CWM (or TWRP) installed!

  1. Go to the Play Store and download the "Quick Boot" tool
  2. Install the application on the device and run it
  3. From the app's menu, select "recovery" and allow your device to boot in recovery mode

Installing PSX Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROM on the Motorola Atrix HD:

  1. Using your computer, download the PSX zip file by visiting this link
  2. Since the ROM does not include Google apps, you will need to download the package separately. Visit this link in order to do so
    • Download the files and place them in a folder, but don't unzip them!
  3. After the files are downloaded, connect your Atrix HD to your computer using the USB cable (NOTE: remember that USB Debugging should be enabled at this point)
  4. Copy the downloaded files, and paste them onto your phone's SD memory
  5. Once the files have been transferred, disconnect your smartphone from your computer. You will no longer need your computer for the installation process
  6. Now, enter recovery mode. Refer to the guide above in order to do so
  7. At this point, you should create a NANDROID backup. This will create a save point for your current ROM, and will allow you to return to your current ROM should you choose to do so. To create a backup, select "backup and restore", name the file and save it
  8. Once the backup is created, you will perform a full wipe. Select "Wipe data / factory reset"
  9. Return to the main recovery menu and select "wipe cache partition"
  10. Then, select "advance and select "wipe dalvick cache" as well
  11. Once the wipe is complete, go to the main recovery menu
  12. Select "install zip from SD card" > "choose zip from SD card"
  13. Select the PSX custom ROM file and flash it on your device
  14. Once the process is complete, select "install zip from SD card" again and choose the Google apps package in order to flash it
  15. After both files have been flashed, select "+++go back+++" and select "reboot system now". NOTE: this first reboot may take a while to complete. Be patient and don't press any buttons
  16. Contragulations! You should now run PSX Android 4.4 KitKat ROM. You can add your Google account, and perform restores using Helium and other apps that you may have used

NOTE: If the first boot after the flash takes too long (more than 10 minutes or so), or if your device is stuck in a loop then you need to perform the entire guide from the start, without skipping any steps.

NOTE: if PSX is not your cup of tea and you wish to return to your previous ROM, then you can use the NANDROID backup created at step 7 in order to do so. Simply boot your smartphone in recovery mode, and select "backup / restore", then follow the additional prompts

  4. Access the "Info" tab
  5. Mark the "Sync Contacts With" check box and select "Google Contacts" from the drop-down list
  6. Enter your Google login credentials if you haven't done so before. Alternatively, click "Configure" and select a previously set Google account

Using iCloud to Transfer Contacts from an iPhone:

In case you've used the iCloud service on your iPhone before, then your contacts have probably been backed up onto your iCloud account. You can use this account to export the contacts onto your ZTE. To do so:

  1. On your computer, use the Internet browser to visit www.icloud.com
  2. Sign in with your iCloud account
  3. Click "Contacts"
  4. Select the desired contacts from the list
  5. Now click the cog wheel icon (it's located in the bottom-left side) and select "Export vCard"
  6. Your computer will now download the VCF file containing the previously selected contacts
  7. Once complete, import the VCF file to "Google Contacts". Alternatively, you can connect your ZTE Grand X Pro to your computer using the USB cable, copy the VCF file onto your phone's "/sdcard" directory, and use the "People" app to import these contacts. Open the "People" app, tap "Menu" > "Import / Export" > "Import from storage" / "SDcard"

Using the "My Contacts Backup" to Transfer iPhone Contacts:

My Contacts Backup is an iOS application that allows you to transfer your iPhone contacts over to your ZTE Grand X Pro using your Gmail address.

  1. On your iPhone, browse the App Store and install "My Contacts Backup"
  2. Launch the application and tap "Backup"
  3. Once the contact backup is complete, select "Email" to attach the VCF file to an email
  4. In the email containing the VCF file attachment, use your own Gmail address as the recipient and send the email
  5. Now, on your ZTE Grand X Pro, open the email containing the VCF file and download the attachment to import the contacts to your phone

Using the "Bump" Application to Transfer iPhone Contacts:

Bump is an application that works on both iOS and Android. You can use this app in order to transfer your contacts using cloud computing. NOTE: this app requires an active Internet connection on both smartphones.

  1. On your ZTE Grand X Pro, visit the Play Store and download "Bump"
  2. On your iPhone, visit the App Store and download the same application
  3. Launch the app on both smartphones and allow permissions
  4. On the iPhone, go to the contacts section to view the list of all your contacts
  5. Select the contacts that you wish to share
  6. After you see a "Bump now!" label in the top-right corner, you can lightly bump the two devices together to begin the transferring process
  7. Tap the "Connect" button in the dialog box
  8. Your previously selected contacts should now be transferred to your ZTE Grand X Pro

Confusion about iPhone 5 shortcomings

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:24 AM PST

I currently have iPhone 5. I am satisfied but it is lacking certain features such as increasing memory by using a mini SD Card, and it won't download many Google features or Mozilla Firefox. Many videos are unable to play (Windows Player). The screen gets washed-out in sunlight (need OLED screen), the battery must get charged 3X day and cannot be changed, the screen size is quite small and the unit gets very hot while charging. I was considering a Samsung Galaxy but 2 friends have battery problems with that as well. I am confused. Any suggestions?

Unlock Motorola Droid Ultra (Verizon) to use with Straight Talk

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:44 AM PST

OK, I've moved to an area with no Verizon coverage, so they are releasing me from my contract. US Cellular has coverage where I'm relocating. My question is, is there any way I can use this phone with Straight Talk? Or am I just stuck with a useless phone once I cancel/port my number?
