News: Proposed Cell Phone Ban Shot Down by DOT

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 09:55 PM PST

The U.S. Department of Transportation handed down his opinion on the future possibility of a proposed ban that would restrict cell phone use – including hands-free use – while driving. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood stated that he is against such an action and that in all likelihood, laws around the country will remain the same.

LaHood stated that he doesn't believe that Bluetooth and other internal systems built into cars cause accidents and that instead of blaming the cell phone in totality, blame should be focused on text messaging and hand-held calls. The secretary points to the fact that there are already laws in place throughout the country that prohibit this type of activity and the key to success is to enforce existing laws as opposed to implementing new ones.

Automobile safety regulators from the NTSB recommended a total ban of cell phones and hands-free units almost two weeks ago after reviewing a case in Missouri that resulted in a deadly car crash. NTSB referred to cell phone use as the new DUI and said it was an epidemic that has taken the country by storm. Car makers and cell phone carriers were relieved as the ban could have impacted profit margins.

The NTSB cannot impose a national ban without the Obama administration's approval. The Department of Transportation has rule-making authority over the NTSB which prevents them from implementing any rules contrary to the DOT secretary's wishes.

Debate may be reignited next year as the NTSB will be releasing its study on the level of risk of driving with hands-free devices. If the report shows significant risk, it may put further pressure on Ray LaHood to reevaluate his position.

How-to: Four Important How-Tos on the Pantech Pocket

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 08:30 PM PST

1. Viewing Documents – You can view pdf, excel, ppt, word and text documents on your Pantech Pocket. To do so, navigate to 'Applications > Document Viewer'. Select and tap a folder where you have the document you wish to view stored. Next, select and tap the specific document. You can zoom in by holding the zoom button and dragging up, and you can zoom out by dragging down. There are two buttons with two arrows: one set of horizontal and one set of vertical. These can be used to fit the document to the length or width of the screen.

2. Using the Phone As Mass Storage – You can copy files between the computer and the microSD card on the phone. Navigate to 'Applications > Settings'. From here, navigate to 'Storage > USB Mode' and make sure USB debugging is off. Now select 'Mass Storage > Turn on USB storage > OK'. You can now select and copy phones from the phone to the PC. Tap 'Turn Off USB Storage' when finished copying files and then disconnect the phone from the computer.

3. Create A Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot – You can enable your phone to serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five other devices. To do this, navigate to 'Applications > Settings' and then 'Wireless & networks > Tethering and portable hotspot'. Tap 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot'. The phone can now offer the internet connection to other devices around you.

4. Sharing Contact Information – Did you know you can share a contact's information through a variety of different ways? Simply navigate to 'Applications > Contacts' and press and hold on a contact. The 'Share' option will appear; select this and you will be given the option to share via Bluetooth, Gmail or Text Messaging.

Want to get out of your Verizon contract?

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 12:59 PM PST

Do you want out of your Verizon contract and have an unlimited data plan? I am looking for that plan. I would be willing to buy out your remaining contract and you would be free to go to any other carrier immediately. Please contact me only if your plan has the unlimited data package. Please PM me if you are interested and we can discuss the details.

Thanks

Phone Newbie, Weird Question

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 03:34 PM PST

Hello all,

I'm not sure this is the best subforum, but I will try:

I have never owned a cellphone. I am looking for my first, but don't really know enough about them to know what does and doesn't do what I need. Basically, my family is on AT&T, and I can't afford a data plan. I want phone and text obviously, and I would like a full QWERTY keyboard, which I assume is pretty easy to find cheapish. The final thing, though. is I am going to start college and really want a really good calender/day planner on there. I know so little about phones that I don't even know where to start for qualifying one. If I had a cheaper smart phone, with no data plan, could I use my broadband network at home to download and install free apps? Do a lot of cheaper phones just already have a good function like that? Can anyone provide me with a little guidance and maybe some recommendations? I don't know how any of this works.

Thanks

Complete NEWBIE - need help buying new phone

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 09:19 AM PST

Hey complete newbie here,

So due to recent work changes I need to get a new phone... I'm a complete newbie when it comes to phones and have some really basic questions I was hoping the experts can help me answer.

But before that, let me just give a brief summary how I plan to use the phone:

- The main reason I need a new phone is that I need to put a lot of medical information applications on there so I can have access to them at the hospital (medscape, epocrates, medcalc etc etc). I'm a medical student and work in the hospital often.
- I don't really make a lot of calls at all, but I do text occasionally.
- And finally, I need something that can access the internet with a browser using in-house wireless wifi for internet access

So my questions are, for my purposes listed above

1. What phone do you recommend and why? I'm looking around the net and currently am there are so many phones out there I have no idea what do get. Currently I'm thinking looking at Samsung galaxy sII, HTC Evo 4G, iphone4 and some Motorola phones, by no means I'm limited to these, I'm actually hoping for some suggestions from experienced users... I just listed these as an example because they apparently are showing up a lot when I search.

2. Which operating systems is better? I realize this is an android forum, but I have no clue what operating systems are out there except for google android and apple iOS.

3. I'm really looking to get a phone without any contracts and pay as I go.... because I can't afford a ridiculous $100 dollar monthly bill just for a few calls and texts, I was wondering if I can use pre-paid phone cards if I go no contract? What kind of cards can I use?

4. Internet access - I plan to use wireless wifi, and don't want to pay $25-30/month just for something ridiculously limited like 200mb. Can all smart phones access wireless internet if it's available?

5. Can CDMA technology phones be used globally?

Thank you in advance for any replies, I tried to research as much as I can given the time I have before posting. I do apologize in advance if I asked for information easily searched. ;)

iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy S2?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 03:53 AM PST

I am about to buy a smartphone but am not sure which one to choose. Apple is great, I am used to iOS; I have an iPad 2. I have no experience with Android.
Which one should I choose? Or do you know a better alternative?

The most important thing for me is a good calendar which is fast accessible, I like to have a calendar at the homescreen. I know this will be possible with a jailbroken iPhone 4S, but is it with the SGS2?

New smartphone Noob question: Stylus for Huawei Impulse 4G (AT&T)?

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 03:12 PM PST

Hi everyone,

I am a total smartphone noob, my last new phone was 2005 and I was new then. Those were just basic Nokias, nothing fancy at all except a few games and texting. Now I've got a Huawei Impulse 4G (AT&T) and it has internet and a cam and an HD cam and and all these apps and probably angry birds, lol, and it practically does the dishes and I can hardly turn it on, total culture shock, and then I read this this phone is rather "low-end" and doesn't do a lot. What are standard phones doing now: beaming people into space? lol The connection is faster than my home net connection, lol.

BUT, and there is a big but, I find it difficult at best to use the keyboard because of how tiny it is. I have fairly small fingers for a guy and can still not get accurate typing done, which renders it very frustrating compared to my PC.

Is there some kind of stylus available for it? And would it work on ANY touchscreen phone, or does it have to be Impulse 4G specific?

I have found it does not respond at all to pens or other sharp objects, just my fingers, but as I said, it can be very frustrating. I think my experience would be more enjoyable if I had some kind of stylus for it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
