Huawei Model H226c Straight Talk Home Phone Antenna

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 10:30 PM PDT

Well I may have went from the frying pan into the fire but the LG900 has just about done me in. So I said well I will put this on hold and try the straight Talk Home Phone it will be with a different carrier.
Well when I hooked it up guess what barely a signal after a few tears and maybe a cuss or two I saw that the antenna screws on so maybe a outside remote. Down 127.00 with the card and tax held hostage by att. Need help before I go off the deep end. Thanks for any help.

Need simple phone

Posted: 27 Apr 2013 05:07 AM PDT

Hi. I am olde fashioned and want a 'no bells and whistles" phone which has excellent reception (important).

I am a Verizon wireless user, and have had , over the past couple of years, a Samsung knock, and a Samsung gusto

These two phones were mediocre at best. The gusto has gone totally whacky on me and will not receive calls at all, and goes into these strange modes of silence and will not receive most calls.

Is there a plain phone of any sort which I can use with Verizon ..I am not sure what unlocking means, but does it mean I purchase a phone which Verizon does not normally carry, and unlock it to be used by Verizon?

I need a new phone immediately..and a simple one. I do not even send text messages so my needs are simple. I just need good reception.
Thanks
Al

Blackberry Z10 or Sony ?

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 03:49 AM PDT

Hello guys!

I'm Peter, and I'm new to the forum.

I'm looking for a place to introduce myself, but can't find any, so decided to post in the general discussion board.

I'm hoping to get as many tips on whether to purchase BlackBerry Z10 after years of loving Sony Ericsson.

What do you guys think?

How-to: Use your Android or iOS device as a video baby monitor for under $70

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 11:54 AM PDT

There are several video baby monitors out there that are over $200, and you can't even use them outside of your home!

I found a simple solution that will allow you to monitor your baby (or just about anything else) from your phone, while at home or away. for under $70. All you need is a wi-fi network, the below camera, and an Android or iOS phone or tablet.

Here's how to do it:
  1. Buy this camera: Amazon.com: Foscam FI8918W Wireless/Wired Pan & Tilt IP/Network Camera with 8 Meter Night Vision and 3.6mm Lens (67° Viewing Angle): Camera & Photo
  2. When you get it, follow the directions to set it up on your home wi-fi network:
    1. Install the IPCamSetup.exe software on your computer
    2. Plug the camera in, and into your wi-fi router with supplied cable
    3. Run IP Camera Tool and double click the IP of the camera that appears (note the IP address, it should be 192.168.1.xx)
    4. Login using username 'admin' (no password)
    5. Select the appropriate option "ActiveX" for MSIE or "Server Push Mode" for everything else (allow activex to run if MSIE)
    6. you should now see video from the camera - select "Device Management"
    7. Click Wireless Lan Settings
    8. Fill in the information for your wireless network - make sure the encryption matches what you have setup on your router, and click "Submit"
    9. If you would like to set a password you can do so from "Users Settings"
    10. The camera will reboot - unplug from the router - it should now be wireless assuming the settings were entered correctly
    11. Note that if you have a bad wifi connection to the camera then video will be slow - if this is the case consider hard wiring the camera

  3. If you have an Android device install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...t.foscamremote - If iOS this app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camv...416551665?mt=8 (you can pay for and install the official Foscam apps if you want, but these apps work just fine
  4. Enter the IP address of the camera as shown in your browser window, the port (default is 80), and the username/password (default is admin, no password)
  5. If everything is right you should be able to connect to the camera via your phone/tablet!
  6. To get sound select "Speaker" (this model camera does not have two way audio). If you plan on using your phone exclusively for sound monitoring, considering plugging in your phone or the battery will drain fast.

If you would like to access the camera from outside of your network, like from work, here's how to do it:
  1. Open IP Camera Tool, right click on the camera, and select Network Config.
  2. Under HTTP port change 80 to something non-standard, like 8090
  3. Enter the username and password and click ok
  4. The camera will restart
  5. To access the camera again, you'll have to enter the IP and the port like :192.168.1.xx:8090 -
  6. Get your public IP address by going to What Is My IP Address ® | Shows Your IP Address. - write it down.
  7. If your router is configured with port forwarding you should now be able to access your camera by going to http://yourIP:8090 in any web browser - make sure you setup a password on the camera!
  8. Don't forget to change the port and IP settings on your Android or iOS device if you plan on using that to view the camera. Keep mobile data in mind!

If you do not have port forwarding enabled on your router you'll have to set it up by logging into your router (usually 192.168.1.1 in your browser) and configuring the settings. Depending on the router, there are a couple different ways to do this (search for your router name + "port forwarding" for more specific instructions:
  • Look for a UPnP setting and enable it - go into the settings on the camera > UPnP setting and check to enable
  • OR look for Virtual Server or Port Forwarding setting and map the camera IP and port manually. It will show up as the local IP (192.168.1.xx:8090)
  • If your router sets IPs dynamically, you may need to enable DDNS to always set the camera to the same IP.

How-to: Change/clean your ESN - is it illegal?

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 03:58 AM PDT

ESN's of CDMA phones (Sprint & Verizon, for example) will be marked as 'bad' if the previous owner lost the phone, it was stolen, or they didn't pay their bill. That ESN will be marked as bad in carrier's systems. The only way around this is to pay the bill, or change the ESN.

To change the ESN requires some special software, like CDMA Tool. DFS software. www.cdmatool.com . (you also have to know what you're doing with the software). It also requires that you have another ESN of a similar phone on hand. This technically makes the process illegal under 18 USC § 1029 - Fraud and related activity in connection with access devices, since you are, in effect, cloning a phone.

Specifically, under 1029.a.1 the process of cleaning an ESN is illegal if you "Knowingly and with intent to defraud produces, uses, or traffics in one or more counterfeit access devices;" (access device = the phone with changed ESN)

The process of changing an ESN is not illegal if you get permission from the original carrier that the phone was activated on. In this case the carrier will provide the ESN, which in a lot of cases comes from a cheap donor phone, which is destroyed afterwords.

There are "services" out there that will change the ESN for you, but beware, what they're doing is illegal, and who knows where they are getting the donor ESN from.

What will it mean for German users?

Deutsche Telekom has been trying to make a deal with MetroPCS. I wonder what that will mean for German cell phone users? Could they also be getting an opportunity for a prepaid service?

Walmart's Straight Talk vs. MetroPCS

Can someone spy on you using your phone's camera?

Posted: 01 Apr 2013 09:47 AM PDT

I've heard of software that turns on the webcam on computers, but how about cell phones?
Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I would imagine that this could work in theory assuming the phone has a data connection. If not video then maybe the camera can take pics remotely.
