How-to: Manage Contacts on the (ZTE) Sprint Vital – Part 2 (importing / exporting; working with groups)

Importing and Exporting Contacts From and To the microSD Card

Importing Contacts from the microSD Card:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Press the "Menu" capacitive key on your device
  3. Select "Import/export" then tap "Import from SD card"
  4. Select the account you wish to save the contacts on
  5. Tap the vCard file / files located on the microSD then tap "OK"

Exporting Contacts to the microSD Card:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app
  2. Tap the "Menu" button on your device > "Import/export" > "Export to SD card"
  3. You will be prompted with the name of the vCard file. Tap "OK" to create the file on the microSD card


Working with Contact Groups

Adding a New Group:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Select the "Groups" tab
  3. Tap the icon depicting a group and the "+" symbol to create a new group
  4. If necessary, select the account for which the group will be created
  5. Type in the desired name for the group in the "Group's name" field
  6. Press "Done" when ready

Adding Group Members:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app then tap the "groups" tab
  2. Tap the desired group's name
  3. Touch the icon depicting a group then select the contacts that you wish to add
  4. Press the "Checkmark" icon to add the selected contacts

Renaming a Group:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Select the "groups" tab
  3. Tap the "Menu" button on your smartphone then select "Rename group"
  4. Tap the group's name and edit it as you see fit
  5. Press "Done" when ready

Removing a Member from a Group:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app and tap the "groups" tab
  2. Press "Menu" > "Select item(s)"
  3. Tap the contacts that you wish to remove from the group
  4. Touch the "bin" icon to remove the selected contacts

Deleting a Group:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app
  2. Tap the "groups" tab
  3. Select the group you wish to remove then press "Menu" > "Disband group"
  4. Tap "OK" to confirm. Note: the contacts within the group will not be deleted, only the group will be

Adding a Contact:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon located on the home screen
  2. Find and select "People"
  3. In case you have multiple account types associated with the device, tap the field above the name and select a contact type.
    - Assuming that a sync account is selected (such as a Google Account), the contacts will be automatically synced with that account, while online.
    - In case you wish to save a contact only on the phone, select "Phone only, unsynced"
  4. Complete the fields as you see fit: type-in a name for the account, select a picture, an email, postal address etc.
  5. Tap "Done" when you've finished adding information

Saving a Phone Number:

  1. While on the home screen, tap the "Phone" icon
  2. Type-in the desired phone number and tap "Add to contacts"
  3. If you wish to add the number to an existing contact, select the desired contact. To add a new contact, tap "Create New Contact"
    - For an existing contact, tap the contact name, select a number type and tap "OK"
    - For a new contact, type in the name and the desired additional information, then press "Done"

Editing a Contact:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Select the desired contact, tap the "Menu" button on your device, select "Edit"
  3. Edit the contact as you see fit. When ready, tap "Done" to save the changes

Assigning a Picture to a Contact:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app on the home screen
  2. Tap the desired contact, press the "Menu" button > "Edit"
  3. Tap the picture icon and "Choose photo from Gallery". Browse through your photos and select the desired one.
  4. Once the picture is selected, tap "OK" to assign it, the tap "Done" to save the changes.

Assigning a Ringtone to a Contact:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Select the desired contact, tap the "Menu" key > "Set ringtone"
  3. Select the desired music file or ringtone
  4. Press "OK" to assign the ringtone

Deleting a Contact:

  1. Access the "Contacts" app
  2. Select the contact that you wish to delete
  3. Press the "Menu" capacitive button on your device and select "Delete"
  4. Tap "OK" to confirm

Sharing a Contact:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Select the contact that you wish to share, tap the "Menu" button and select "Share"
  3. Select the desired method of sharing in the "Share contact via" menu.

    - Bluetooth: sends the information via Bluetooth to a paired device
    - Email: sends the contact information as an email attachment to the desired recipient
    - Gmail: sends the contact information as a Gmail attachment
    - Messaging: sends the information in the form of a vCard attachment in an MMS
    - Wi-Fi Direct: Send the information using Wi-Fi Direct

Creating a Google Account on Your Device:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on the home screen
  2. Find and select "Settings"
  3. Tap "Add account" and select "Google"
  4. Press "New"
  5. Type in your first and last name, then press the "next" icon
  6. Type in the desired username then tap the "next" icon. If the username is already in use, you'll need to select another one
  7. Enter and re-enter your password then press the "next" icon
  8. Enter a secondary email address as a way to recover your password if lost, and create a security question and answer. Tap the "next" icon again
  9. Tap "Join Google+" and follow the on-screen instructions. Alternatively you can select "Not now"
  10. Select the desired web history, Google Play and account options in the "Finish account" screen, then tap the "next" icon
  11. Type-in the characters shown on-screen then press "next"
  12. Provide your credit card information in order to be able and purchase apps, movies, games, books etc. from the Google Play Store. Alternatively, you can tap "Not now"
  13. Once your smartphone connects with Google's servers, select your sync preferences then tap the "next" icon

Signing In to an Existing Google Account:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on the home screen and select "Settings"
  2. Tap "Add account" > select "Google"
  3. Tap "Existing"
  4. Type in your Gmail account's username and password, then press the "next" icon
  5. Enter your credit card information to be able and make purchases from the Google Play Store via the mobile app. Alternatively, you can select "Not now"
  6. Once your device connects with the Google servers, select the desired sync options and press the "next" icon

Sending a Gmail Message:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon and select "Gmail"
  2. While in the inbox, tap the "compose" icon depicted as an envelope
  3. Tap the "To" field and type in the desired recipient's email address. If you wish to send an email to multiple recipients, separate the addresses with commas.
  4. Assuming that you wish to send a "carbon copy" (Cc) or a "blind carbon copy" (Bcc) of the email to other recipients, tap the "Menu" button on your device then select "Add Cc/Bcc" and enter the desired recipients
  5. Optionally, you can attach a picture or a video by pressing the "Menu" button and selecting "Attach picture" or "Attach video"
  6. Once you're done composing the message, press the "Send" icon depicted as an arrow pointing to the right

To Read and Reply to a Gmail Message:

  1. Access the "Gmail" app
  2. Tap the email that you wish to read
  3. To reply, tap the "Reply" icon depicting an arrow pointing left.
  4. To reply all or forward the email, tap the "menu" icon on-screen (depicted as three vertical dots) and select "Reply all" / "Forward"
  5. After you're done composing / editing the email, tap the "Send" icon

Adding the First Email Account (POP3 or IMAP):

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on the home screen to open the apps drawer
  2. Select "Email"
  3. Type-in the email address and password then tap "Next". Let your phone check the incoming and outgoing server settings
  4. Set the email download options, checking frequency, account name etc. Tap "Next" when ready, until you reach the "Inbox"

Adding a New Email Account (POP3 or IMAP):

If you have already added an email account in the past and you wish to add a new one:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on the home screen then select "Email"
  2. In the Inbox, tap the "Menu" button on your device
  3. Select "Settings" > "Add Account"
  4. Type in the email address and password
  5. Press "Next" and let your device check the outgoing and incoming server settings
  6. Set the email download options, checking frequency, account name etc. Tap "Next" when ready, until you reach the "Inbox"

Adding an Exchange ActiveSync Account:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on the home screen then select "Email"
  2. Assuming that another account is already set up, tap the "Menu" button on your device, tap "Settings" > "Add Account"
  3. Type in your email address and password, then tap "Manual setup". (If needed, contact your exchange server administrator for your sign-in information)
  4. Press "Exchange"
  5. Enter the password, domain/username and server information
  6. Press "Next" when reaching the "activation disclaimer"
  7. Set up the email settings as you see fit ("Days to sync", "Inbox Checking frequency" and more)
  8. Press "Next"

Composing and Sending an Email:

  1. Access the apps drawer and select "Email"
  2. Open the "Inbox" then tap the "compose" icon depicted as an envelope
  3. Set the desired recipient / recipients by either typing in the recipient's email address in the "To" field, or pressing the "Contacts" icon and selecting the desired recipient from your contacts list
  4. Set a subject then compose your email
  5. In case you wish to add an attachment, tap the "Menu" button on your device and select "Attach file"
  6. When ready, tap the "Send" icon. Alternatively you can save your email to send it later by pressing the "Menu" button and selecting "Save draft"

Viewing and Replying to an Email:

  1. Access the "Email" app
  2. While in your email account's Inbox, tap the message that you wish to view
  3. If you can't see the email, press "Download message"
  4. To reply to an email, tap the "Menu" button on your device > Action > Reply or Reply all

Deleting an Email Message:

  1. Access the "Email" app
  2. While in the Inbox, tap the message that you wish to delete, press the "Bin" icon > "OK"

To delete multiple messages, tap the checkboxes corresponding to the email messages that you wish to delete (while in Inbox), then press the "Bin" icon and tap "OK"

Deleting an Email Account:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on your home screen, then browse and open "Email"
  2. Tap the "Menu" button on your device
  3. Select "Settings", select the desired account and press "Remove account"
  4. Tap "OK" to confirm

Adding an Email Widget on the Home Screen:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon on your home screen
  2. Select "Widgets"
  3. Tap and hold the "Email" widget, then drag it in the desired location on the home screen

Wi-Fi Management

Enabling / Disabling Wi-Fi:

  1. While on the home screen, press the "Menu" capacitive button
  2. Select "System settings"
  3. Tap the "Wi-Fi" slider to enable or disable Wi-Fi connectivity

Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network:

  1. Press the "Menu" button while on the home screen
  2. Tap "System settings"
  3. Press on "Wi-Fi" (not the slider, but the text itself)
  4. If necessary, tap the "Wi-Fi" slider to enable Wi-Fi
  5. Tap the network that you wish to connect to. If the network is password-protected, type-in the password / login credentials then press "Connect"
  6. If a network does not appear, press the "Menu" button and select "Scan"

Enabling / Disabling Wi-Fi Hotspot:

  1. While on the home screen, press the "Menu" capacitive key on your device
  2. Select "System settings"
  3. Tap the slider next to "Portable hotspot" to enable or disable the feature

Setting Up Wi-Fi Hotspot:

  1. Press the "Menu" button on your device while on the home screen
  2. Tap "System settings"
  3. Press "Portable hotspot" (the text itself, not the slider)
  4. Tap "Configure"
  5. Edit the "Network SSID" and the "Password" as you see fit, and select the desired "Security" type
  6. Press "Save"
  7. Tap the "Menu" capacitive button
  8. Select "Manage Users"
  9. Tap "Max connection" and select the desired number of connections allowed at one time
  10. Press the "Back" key twice then tap the "Portable hotspot" slider to enable mobile hotspot


Bluetooth Management

Enabling / Disabling Bluetooth:

  1. While on the home screen, press the "Menu" capacitive button on your handset
  2. Select "System settings"
  3. Tap the "Bluetooth" slider to enable or disable Bluetooth

Pairing With a Bluetooth Device:

  1. Press the "Menu" button while on the home screen
  2. Select "System settings"
  3. Tap "Bluetooth" (the text, not the slider)
  4. If necessary, tap the "Bluetooth slider" to enable Bluetooth
  5. Tap "Search for devices"
  6. Once the scanning process is complete, select the desired Bluetooth device from the list
  7. Tap "Pair". If required, type-in the appropriate passkey. (Keep in mind that by default, most Bluetooth handsets have the passkey "0000" or "1234")

Sending and Viewing Text Messages:

  1. Tap the "Messaging" icon located on the home screen
  2. Press the "New message" icon located at the bottom-left corner of the screen
  3. Tap the "To" field then type-in the desired recipient's phone number
  4. Tap the "Type message" field and write the desired message
  5. When ready, press the "Send" icon (bottom-right corner)

To view your text messages:

  1. Tap the "Messaging" icon on the home screen
  2. Select the desired message thread

Sending and Receiving Text Messages Containing Images:

  1. On the home screen, tap the "Messaging" icon
  2. Tap the "New message" icon
  3. Type in the name or phone number of the recipient in the "To" field
  4. To attach an image to your text message, tap the icon depicted as a paperclip (top-right corner)
  5. Select "Pictures", tap the desired album and select the image you wish to attach
  6. Optionally, type in your message in the appropriate field
  7. Press the "Send" icon

To view and save a message attachment:

  1. Access the "Messaging" app then select the desired conversation
  2. Once the multimedia message is displayed, you can tap the "Save" icon to save the attachment

Forwarding a Text / Multimedia Message:

  1. Tap the "Messaging" icon
  2. Select the desired message thread
  3. Touch and hold the message that you wish to forward
  4. Select "Forward"
  5. Tap the "To" field and type in the recipient's name or phone number
  6. Edit the message as you see fit. When ready, press the "Send" icon

Enabling / Disabling Emergency Alerts:

  1. Access the "Messaging" application
  2. Press the "Menu" capacitive button on your device
  3. Select "Settings" > "Emergency Alerts"
  4. Check or uncheck the "Emergency RMT Messages" option.
  5. Optionally, you can check or uncheck various other features such as "Imminent Threat-Extreme" or "Amber Alerts". "Presidential Alerts" cannot be disabled.

Browsing the Web:

  1. Tap the "Browser" icon located on the home screen (if not present, you can locate it in the apps drawer)
  2. If this is the first time opening the browser, you'll need to type-in your Sprint phone number and press "OK"
  3. Tap the navigation bar and type-in the desired web address, then tap "Go" on the on-screen keyboard
  4. While visiting a website, swipe up and down to scroll. Pinch or spread with two fingers to zoom in an out

Adding a Bookmark:

  1. Open the browser and visit the desired website
  2. Press the "Menu" capacitive button on your device
  3. Select "Save to bookmarks"
  4. Enter the information you desire, then press "OK"
  5. To open the bookmarks list, tap the "Menu" button while in the browser then select "Bookmarks"
  6. To visit the desired webpage, tap the associated bookmark

Opening a Webpage in a New Tab:

  1. Open the browser
  2. Tap the "Windows" button (second button located on the bar at the bottom of the display - counting right to left)
  3. Press the "+ New" icon
  4. To switch between browsing tabs, tap the "Windows" button again and select the desired tab. Tap "X" on a tab that you wish to close.

Clearing Browser Cache:

  1. Tap the "Browser" icon located on the home screen
  2. Press the "Menu" button on your device
  3. Select "Settings" > "Privacy & Security"
  4. Tap "Clear cache" then press "OK" to confirm

Note: to clear the browser cookies, follow steps 1 to 3 and then tap "Clear all cookie data" then press "OK"

Changing the Browser Homepage:

  1. Tap the "Browser" icon located on the home screen
  2. Press the "Menu" button on your device
  3. Select "Settings"
  4. Tap "General" > "Set homepage"
  5. Select the desired homepage option
