Slow phone (international)

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:53 PM PDT

Howdy folks, I was hoping someone could help me with this.

I just recently took in a Chinese international student. When he connects to our WI-FI he is getting very slow internet speeds, when I test my desktop I'm showing a download of 19.7 Megs, when he tests his phone he's getting barely 250 k .

I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do that it is an international phone. It's an IPhone 5 though I can't really check the settings or anything because I don't actually speak Chinese myself.

Has anyone else ran into this situation or have another suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

good iphone 4s case?

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 12:04 PM PDT

So me and my gf both got new white 16gb iphone 4s (she still gets one with her family not with me until after this 2 years when we are moved in together) and i got the same but i got it on virgin mobile because they had a good deal (2 months free service plus 15% off the msrp on the iphone). I work in a very rugged enviorment and im looking for a case and my gf also is pretty rough with her phone.

I currently have these on there with a zagg shield but i dont like the zagg shield tbh http://shop.impactgel.com/Impact-Gel...-Case-I4MC.htm

It made my phone seem less responsive and gives the screen a washed out look. I was looking for something pretty durable for drops and scuffs for both of us but dont want to spend a fortune on like that new otterbox armor or a life proof. I know that 80$ for a case is worth it on a 500$ phone but still its not really in the budget.

Should i go for the otterbox defender hybrid series that are right around 30 bucks? Or is there other things that are similar priced? I want the case to not be too big or bulky (i expect some bulk but just not huge) and i want one of those integrated screen protectors thats built into the case to save the trouble and hassle of them. I dont actually use my phone for work i just always have it on me in case of emergency so i dont want some huge gigantic industrial armor for my phone that makes it hard to use, i would say 50% of my time is texting 30% is playing games and the other 20 is like browser and phone calls and pictures so i would like the case to leave the phone functional.

I havent had any personal experence with otterbox or any other iphone cases so is there anything out there that will suit me well for not too much cash?

If i can add anything else to help you guys help me find something good please let me know. I would prefer to buy a case from amazon if possible because i got a month free of 2 day shipping cause my little sister got a kindle for her birthday but its not 100% nessicary.

Thanks guys !

I need a decent dual-core, dual-sim Android phone

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Hi there,

I have a couple of things that I'm looking for. Firstly I need a phone where I can have two active sim cards working at the same time which could tell me which number is being called, if that's at all possible.
Preferably the phone would be dual core, around 400x800 resolution, Android version 4.0+, pretty mid range stuff.

Thanks!

Lower speeds thru wal-mart??

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 08:39 AM PDT

Samsung Note II.....factory unlocked and now rooted.

Had tmo prepaid unlimited setup...when it showed 3g or H+ I got good speeds(via speedtests0).....sometimes 10 to 12.

Switched to wal-mart family...uses tmo towers?

Now it shows 3g/ H+....BUT......speeds are less than 1 down/ 2 up........
Is this normal for wally?
Can I peak and tweak the Note II to get my old speeds back?

Am I missing something simple?

Help please........
Thanks already.....

Help finding carrier in rural Wisconsin

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 03:20 PM PDT

My 70-year old dad is trying to find out who he can use as a carrier in Wisconsin. Zip 54613.

He is currently a US Cellular customer, and he tells me that he got a letter that said they are shifting him to Verizon? I did a little research, and it appears to me that his account was likely sold to Sprint, not Verizon. However, I cannot see this letter, and thus am confused about what exactly happened to his account. I guess he has had at least one phone conversation with whomever sent him the letter, and as they are not telling him what he wants to hear he is getting very upset.

Beyond that, I am trying to find which carrier would be best for him. He has two different houses, one in 54613, one in Illinois at 60018, and thus needs a phone that works in both locations with no roaming. Being right outside of Chicago, he can use most major carriers, but in doing my research I found that the only carrier that really covers 54613 is Verizon, and for some reason he is opposed to getting a contract with them.

I am having a very hard time trying to get him to understand "roaming" and how it would affect his billing. He went and spoke to a rep at a Cricket store the other day, and he tells me that the rep there swore up and down that the phone would work fine in 54613. I have little doubt that it would work, and I have little doubt that he'd get clobbered with out of network charges.

Is there a site where I can just enter the zip codes and find out what carriers cover the areas? Perhaps there is a smaller local carrier that he can use in both zipcodes? I've tried googling this, but end up with a bunch of useless sites.

Verizon entering Canada??

Posted: 04 Aug 2013 05:22 PM PDT

What are everyone's thoughts on the possibility of Verizon entering the Canadian demographic? Sure has ROBELUS running scared! Do you believe that it will effect Canadians as negatively as they say? Or is it just a scare tactic so we will be on there side and not have more competition in Canada?

Suggested specs

Posted: 04 Aug 2013 03:44 PM PDT

My wife has decided she wants a smart phone. Her requirements are very limited: 1) large screen , 2) good memory capacity, 3) good camera, video not important, 4) Android preferred only because she is familiar with it (she has a tablet), 5) good screen resolution (for viewing photos). Basically she wants a good digital camera with touch screen OS that also connects to cell service. She will take & view photos and talk . Period.
We have been on an AT&T family plan for years and will opt to stay with AT&T or switch to Verizon but will not sign an expensive two year plan because we do not use ANY data service.. I am looking for suggestions that can be had for under $250.00.
Thanks,
jdr37
