How-to: Transfer Your iPhone Contacts to the OPPO Find 7a

Posted: 26 May 2014 06:36 AM PDT

Transferring Contacts via iTunes:

Using iTunes you can sync the contacts saved on your iPhone with your Google account. Synced contacts will include the contact's image, email address, home address and any other contact notes available. For this method you are required to have access to iTunes through a computer connected to the Internet.

  1. Open iTunes on the computer and connect the iPhone to it via USB
  2. Once the iPhone connects, it will appear in iTunes. Click it to go to the smartphone's summary page
  3. Click the "Info" tab and mark the "Sync Contacts With" check box
  4. Select "Google Contacts" from the drop-down menu
  5. Enter your Google account and password if you haven't done so before. Otherwise, you can click "Configure" and select an existing account
  6. Click "Apply" to begin the syncing process
  7. Once that's done, register the same Google account used in iTunes, on the OPPO Find 7a (NOTE: if necessary, go to "Settings" > "Accounts")
  8. Allow the account to sync contacts with your Android smartphone

Transferring Contacts via iCloud:

If you have previously used iCloud on your iPhone, then your contacts should be backed up on your iCloud account. By accessing the account via a computer with Internet access, you can export the contacts in the form of a vCard file which can then be imported on the OPPO device. To do so:

  1. Launch the Internet browser on your PC
  2. Visit https://www.icloud.com/
  3. Sign in with your iCloud account and click "Contacts"
  4. From the list, select the contacts that you wish to export
  5. Click the icon depicting a cog wheel, and select "Export vCard"
  6. Wait for the file to be downloaded on your computer
  7. Import the vCard file to "Google Contacts". Alternatively, skip this step and follow the next one instead:
  8. Connect the OPPO Find 7a to your computer via USB and copy the "vCard" file to the "sdcard" directory. Launch the contacts application and use the "Import" function to locate and import the VCF file's contents to your phonebook

Using "My Contacts Backup" to Transfer Contacts:

In case you wish to transfer your contacts without accessing a computer, you can use certain third party applications such as "My Contacts Backup" in order to share them. My Contacts Backup is an iOS app that can back up the contacts on your iPhone, and send them to an Android smartphone via email. To use this approach:

  1. Launch the App Store and install "My Contacts Backup" on your iPhone
  2. Open the application and tap "Backup"
  3. Once the backup file has been created, tap "Email" and attach it to a new email
  4. Send the email with the attachment to your own Gmail address
  5. Open the email on the OPPO Find 7a and download the attached vCard file
  6. Import the file's contents to your phonebook, using the contacts application and the "Import" function

Transferring Contacts through "Send Anywhere":

Another application (for both iOS and Android) that can be used for contact transfer without needing a computer is "Send Anywhere". The app uses a P2P connection to transfer contacts and other file types from one smartphone to another, even cross-platform. To use this method:

  1. Install "Send Anywhere" on the OPPO Find 7a via the Play Store
  2. From the App Store, download the app on your iPhone too
  3. Once you've installed the app on both devices, open it
  4. From the iPhone, tap "Send" > "Contacts"
  5. Select the contacts that you wish to share and tap "Send"
  6. Select a method of file transfer, such as "Generate QR Code". This allows you to create a code which can be scanned with the OPPO smartphone's camera in order to commence the transfer. You can also tap "Receive" on the Find 7 and type in the transfer code from the iPhone

Future Tech: Cheap Smartphones Set to Rattle Tech Market

Posted: 23 May 2014 03:25 PM PDT

For some time the technology market has been in a transitional state between the days of the old tech dinosaurs, like desktop PCs, and newer, lighter, and smaller connected devices. The need for powerful computing devices has not gone away, but has been confined to a smaller segment of the market. Today you need a reason to have a big tower or powerful laptop; reasons like CAD, video editing, 3D modeling, gaming, and other processor-intensive tasks that are simply not needed by the average user -- and remain a pipe dream for the larger population of the planet, many of whom don't have electricity they can count on. For an increasing fraction of the global population, their ticket to the online world is going to be through a smartphone.

As devices on the lower end of the connected device market become more powerful and less expensive, it puts pressure all the way up the technology ladder. That pressure is being felt by yesterday's tech giants as Microsoft, Apple, and HP struggle to carve out a niche in a technology world driven, in many ways, by a combination of Google and falling hardware prices.

New lower-cost smartphones like the Moto E, which can be had for $129 unlocked, no contract, are going to dramatically expand the mobile smartphone market. Even that thrifty out-of-pocket price point will be challenged by capable smartphones that will be closer to $50. The continued downward pressure on smartphone prices will lead to an expansion of the mobile data market that Ericsson Mobile estimates will balloon to 9.3 billion new subscribers between now and 2019. (Disclosure: Ericsson is one of my former customers.)

Losers in the Mobile Device Transition

The new technology paradigm has been particularly brutal on HP, which recently announced another 11,000 to 16,000 in layoffs as it struggles to find a toehold in a declining market. If you'll remember, HP bought up Compaq and other PC manufacturers to become the largest player in a technology space that's quickly becoming less relevant. In order to stem the slide HP is offering a $99 seven-inch Slate Plus tablet through vendors like Walmart.

Apple is going to be another loser in the commodity smartphone game, as a fully functional $129 smartphone is going to make justifying spending $500 or $600 on a iPhone a tough sell going forward. Recent problems with some iMessage users having problems migrating to Android phones cast Apple in an anti-competitive light, and the company sheepishly announced a forthcoming fix. Despite the rise of commodity hardware, Apple insists it's not going cheap on phones. Time will tell if that's a brilliant marketing strategy or epic denial, but what's for sure is $500 iPhones are not going to be leading the explosion of the global mobile market.

Microsoft has managed to keep posting solid earnings numbers despite the declining market for their most profitable products, operating systems and productivity software. Redmond's mobile operating system was so unnecessary they had to buy Nokia to finally get traction in that space. Even though Windows Mobile is growing quickly, one wonders how the tech giant will remain competitive and be able to attract developers with a 3.9% share of the mobile market in 2014. It's a surreal moment in the tech industry when a company size of Microsoft gives themselves a high five for overtaking Blackberry, a company that's been circling the drain for years.

Another Tech Bubble?

The continued migration to smaller connected devices, and the transition to service model development, have left many in the tech world feeling like we're in another technology bubble. Recent price moves in the tech-heavy NASDAQ certainly lend to the general atmosphere of uncertainty, which definitely feels bubble-like, but may just be a symptom of the broader discomfort inherent in the realignment of the technology sector. The general sense of malaise lead Best Buy's CFO to recently grump about a lack of innovation in the technology market, after a less than sterling quarter for the electronics retailer.

I'm not sure it's in a bubble, but the tech world is waiting for something to collapse -- and perhaps that thing is nothing more than the old ways of doing business.

See Signs Translated Into English -- on Your Phone

Posted: 23 May 2014 11:33 AM PDT

It's very fashionable online nowadays to criticize early adopters of Google Glass, the computerized glasses. Commentators regularly deride people who appear in public wearing Google Glass, referring to them as "glassholes." The assumptions is that someone wearing Google Glass is just like the jerk who spends all their time on their smartphone, but multiplied to the nth degree.

But these critics don't seem to understand the potential benefits of what tech companies call augmented reality. Imagine going to a party, and everyone's name, profession, and dating status floats in the air above their head. Imagine a doctor being able to look at you, and immediately see medical data and images appear on your body. Imagine a mechanic glancing at your car and having the problem part light up. Imagine going to the mall, and floating arrows lead you directly to the store, and even the very product, you're looking for.

Your smartphone already has apps that take advantage of augmented reality, capturing images from your phone's camera and overlaying them with information from the Internet. Some apps let you point your phone at the sky, and overlay it with astronomical data. Others let you peer at your surroundings, and get information about local businesses.

Now Google has purchased Word Lends, a futuristic app that translates foreign languages in real time using your IPhone or Android device's built-in camera. Even the most linguistically- and technologically- challenged traveler can feel like a native. When traveling in a foreign country, Word Lens users simply hold up their phone to a sign -- and the camera will immediately translate it, even approximating a similar typeface.

It's actually very simple. The way it works is: you launch the app, choose the direction of translation (French>English, Portuguese>Italian), point your device's camera at the text to be translated -- and the translation immediately pops up on the screen. It's like something you would see in a episode of The Jetsons. For now at least, users have the choice of translating between English and Portuguese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian. Pretty soon, and probably for a small charge, the app will be able to translate any language.

The app was released in 2010 by a company called Quest Visual, and is completely free -- for a limited time. And let's not forget to mention the most mind-blowing part of this little app: it does not require a costly network connection! The program and its data all live in your phone, so unlike with Siri, you don't need to be online. So, now you can see why Google decided to purchase this amazing application.

The app does have a little bit of a downside -- it has trouble with curvy or fanciful writing or text, and it might make a mistake or two when translating. But for the most part, you will understand what it means.

Word Lends is definitely an app worth having on every smartphone. It might become a traveling essential, along with your travel pillow and 3 oz. plastic bottles. And you should probably invest in the FREE app now, before Google slaps on it as heavy a price as a Rosetta Stone package.

What does this message mean?

Posted: 18 May 2014 02:19 AM PDT

I don't know where to post this so I am posting it here. I have been getting a strange message for the last 24 hours when I try to call my dad. I don't know what cell phone provider he has. But the message I keep receiving is "you have reached a non working number announcement, 14 switch 222-1" What does this message mean? I need to know so I can talk to him about it.
