Straight Talk phone question

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 12:42 PM PST

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, I've had Straight Talk wireless for about a year now in a rural area in Kansas where the service is great. However, their phone selection for my zip code is pretty terrible.

I've had the Samsung R355C phone now for about a year but would really like to upgrade. However, they haven't made a new phone available to my zip code in over a year. I've done some extensive reading, and it seems they really only have two types of phones, phones ending in "G" which are GSM phones, and phones ending in "C" which are CDMA phones. Their customer service is less than useful and couldn't answer this question for me.

I'm looking into just buying a phone off Ebay from another zip code that is a straight talk phone but ends in "C" as well, indicating it's a CDMA phone. Samsung Precedent SCH-M828C - Black (Straight Talk) Smartphone for example. Is there any data that anyone knows of that I read that will tell me if this will work in my area or not? I'm inclined to say yes, but their customer service just tells me that not all phones work in my area and it has to do with my carrier, etc.... Verizon is my carrier and I'm a CDMA area, so I'm not sure why a CDMA phone thats already using straight talks service wouldn't work in my area.... Any thoughts? TIA.

cdma unlock

first off i know there's other threads about unlocking cdma phones but it has nothing conclusive in it. i don't want to hear 'it cant be done' because yes, it can. so don't bother posting that. I'm taking an lg optimus s and a samsung sph-m901 from sprint to boost, this is the one area I've noticed that there is the least amount of resistance. however sprint will not help me, they wont even hear me out they told me today at the corporate office if i can figure out the unlock code i can do whatever i want with it but they will not give it to me. there are a few ways to do this but that's where I'm stuck. i know how to get into the unlock menus but i don't have the preset unlock code. i know the code is either based off of either the esn or the meid. so what are the ways to obtain said unlock code,

someone on the inside that can access the database that's willing to risk there job = unlikely
spend hours and hours guessing = even more unlikely
calculators = easy to use hard to find
dig threw the programming with a questionable program = need to be technologically inclined. which i am.

here's what I've learned, it takes a code to get into the menus to put in the msl/unlock code. the code is a 6 digit number. some kind of mathematical equation can figure out based on the service provider(i have a calculator for metro pcs... doe-sent help me). so what im asking for is if you have anything to add throw in what you know. maybe we can figure this out for everyone with the issue and possible make a how to on it for future generations.

How-to: Troubleshoot Your AT&T Z331

Poor Reception

Your network signal may be too weak where you are located because of lack of coverage, structure interference or the network could be overloaded at the moment. Move to a location where the network signal can be reached in an efficient manner or wait for a short period and try making your call again.

Echo or Noise

This can be caused by either poor network trunk quality on the part of your service provider or poor local telephone line quality. Press the Power/End Key and dial again. You may be switched to a better-quality network trunk or phone line.

Cannot Select Certain Features

Your service provider does not support these features or you have not applied for services that provide these features. Contact your service provider to enable these services for use.

Battery Won't Charge

It can be one of several things. Either the battery or battery charger is damaged, the phone's temperature is below 32°F (0°C) or higher than 113°F (45°C) or there is weak contact between the battery and charger. You can fix these issues by either calling the manufacturer/dealer if the item is defective, moving the phone to a warmer/cooler environment or by checking all connections to make sure the battery, phone, charger and power outlet are all secure.

Phone Won't Turn On

If the phone will not turn on, most likely the battery is drained and needs recharged. Attach the phone to its charger and allow the battery to be replenished.

SIM Card Issues

If you are receiving a SIM card error, the SIM card may be damaged, installed improeperly or came loose or there may be dust/debris on the SIM card contacts. Remove the SIM card, blow out the slot on the phone and reinstall the card. In the instance of coming loose or debris, this should fix the issue. If you continue to get the error after installation, see your dealer in order to have the phone inspected.

Unable to Connect to the Network

Either the SIM card is invalid, you are outside the service area or you have poor signal. Refer to the 'SIM Card Issues' and 'Poor Reception' areas above to try these issues to see if it corrects the problem. If your SIM card is actually invalid (without service), then you will need to contact the service provider to establish service.
